Dear Sir / Madam,
I would like to strongly endorse Ms Portia Mmbidi as a worthy recipient of the Assupol Museum of Heroes Prize. She has shown commitment and dedication that goes beyond the normal call of duty in helping the most marginalised in society, i.e. informal settlements, townships and villages.
With the advent of Covid-19 in South Africa, Ms Mmbidi recognised the impact of the harsh lockdown and sprang into action. She identified the most vulnerable of her community which included grandmothers looking after grandchildren, adolescent girls and young, single mothers. She organised food parcels to those experiencing hunger. She also identified and assisted those suffering from comorbidities that could potentially be fatally affected by the coronavirus. I recognise the crucial and critical work that Portia and Education of Hope Africa is doing. To this end, I have contributed to her cause since May this year.
As the lockdown eased, Ms Mmbidi has devoted her energy to uplifting those in her community through education campaigns around HIV / Aids and TB, as well as providing young women with sanitary pads so that they will not miss school during their menstruation.
I have been in regular communication with Ms Mmbidi since May, and I am impressed by her passion, drive and commitment to help those in need. She has such a positive impact on so many who are incredibly needy, but with additional resources would be able to help so much more.
With support from winning Assupol Museum of Heroes Prize, Ms Mmbidi will be able to ensure the work that she is already doing, is carried out professionally and to a bigger audience.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any further queries.
